Valentine's Day

Historical Facts about Valentine's Day!

I know when Valentine's Day comes around everyone wants to be with their partner and celebrate the day and their love.  It's a wonderful day, especially for those in relationships, but did you know that this day used to be apart of the Roman Catholic Calendar of Saints, and it had nothing to do with romance?

There were many Christian martyrs with the name Valentine a long time ago.  There were two Valentines that were honored on the 14th.  The first was Valentine of Rome.  He was a priest in Rome.  He was martyred around AD 269.

The second was Valentine of Terni was a bishop of Interamna around AD 197.  He was said to have been martyred under the persecution of Emperor Aurelian.

There is mentioned a third Valentine who was martyred in Africa with a lot of companions, but we don't know anything more about him.

In 1969, during the revision of the Roman Catholic Calendar of Saints, they removed Saint Valentine and relegated to particular calendars.  They took it down because, even though it is an ancient holiday, there isn't much known about the Valentines except that they were buried on the Via Flaminia.  Many still celebrate it as a Saint day, but it is no longer in the Roman Catholic Calendar of Saints.

Did you happen to know any of that?  It all started with the Roman Catholics years ago.  However, its gone from a Saints Day to a Romance holiday.  That's not a bad thing, but defiantly different then how it was originally brought into play.  So when you celebrate Valentines Day, remember those saints who started it all!
