These last couple days, I've been reading a novel called Purple Hibiscus
A novel by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Although its not the kind of book I would usually read, it's very interesting. Adichie took a very interesting approach when describing a religious man who is also an extremist.
The novel tells the story about a girl named Kambili, in South Africa, who tries to always make her father happy because it is very easy to disappoint him. He is a super devout catholic who will punish his children for not getting first place in school, and for simply sinning. He mentally abuses them, but in his mind, he is trying to help them and teaching them the godly way to live.
Throughout the entire story, you hope that eventually she will have a mind of her own, and her brother, Jaja would as well. I haven't completed the book yet, but seeing her brother stand up for himself and thinking for himself, you feel so good inside. His father is so outraged that he practically tortures them. You even get to hear about past torture. Kambili just showed a moment where she thinks for herself, and her father practically beats her to death. She was beaten so bad that she was hospitalized.
I have heard about people these days who are extreme in their religion and it makes me really upset. I'm a christian and I have always been. Although I was raised baptist, I believe what I believe no matter what. I feel comfortable in my faith and nothing will change that. When I read about those extremists who are like Eugene in then novel, it makes me mad. People like that are what give faith and religion a bad name because people begin to assume that that's how all religious people are. There are those who are even picketing at soldier's funerals because they believe these radical beliefs. To disturb someone's mourning time and a respectful funeral, its outrageous.
Sorry, I was reading the novel this afternoon, and I felt I had to rant a bit.
Have a nice day!
